The Evolution Nation Voices session at the M7 Msheireb Cultural Forum in Doha brought together artists and educators to reflect on the role of creativity in shaping the region’s cultural future. Wael Shawky, Artistic Director of the Fire Station, spoke with clarity and conviction about the importance of building an education sector that treats art as a profession. His words carried weight: Art is a career, a profession.”

Shawky emphasized the need to appreciate newcomers and encourage young talents who show genuine interest in art. He highlighted Qatar’s enthusiasm for creativity but reminded the audience that education must remain flexible, allowing space for imagination rather than rigid craft training. For him, the challenge is not simply teaching how to make art, but cultivating endurance, authenticity, and openness in the creative process.

The Fire Station itself embodies this vision. Once a civil defense building, it has been transformed into a hub for contemporary art, offering residency programs, mentorship, and platforms for experimentation. It aims to nurture creativity, connect local artists with international networks, and provide the guidance necessary for emerging voices to thrive. Under Shawky’s direction, it has become a vital institution for Doha’s cultural evolution, a place where beautiful talents are recognised and supported.

Yesterday’s discussion underscored a shared commitment to see art not only as passion but as a professional path, and to ensure that the next generation of artists in Doha and beyond are educated with flexibility, imagination, and respect for their own voices.
